Our final volunteer that we'd like to spotlight for National Volunteer Week is Rachel Lustig, Beyond Borders' current Board President. Rachel comes from a large family--1 and 9--and many of her siblings have been involved with Beyond Borders' work over the years, too, as loyal supporters, fundraisers, and volunteers.
Rachel serves as the leader of the Board because, "the values of the organization are similar to my own," she says.
"I love how Beyond Borders works together with local communities to build their capacity to change themselves."
She also points to her faith as a reason she is called to this work, with that faith being reinforced through doing this work.
While Rachel does not have a favorite program that Beyond Borders supports, she was particularly drawn to the work of Rethinking Power when she had a chance to visit the program's office in Jacmel, Haiti.
"What I saw was young people using pop culture and their newfound confidence to speak out against violence," she says.
Rachel, an avid dancer and self-proclaimed "freestyler," is excited about what the future holds for Beyond Borders.
"We’ve been going through a period of growth for the organization, and I have been very proud of the heightened level of professionalism and Board engagement that I've seen," she says.
Please join us in saying a big mèsi anpil (thank you very much) to Rachel!
